While it may not always be easy to talk about, many families find comfort in taking time to consider and document their wishes in advance. Pre-planning provides an opportunity to make thoughtful decisions without the emotional stress and time pressures that often follow a death.
Whether your wishes are simple or highly personalized, pre-planning allows you to reflect on what feels meaningful to you and your family. Arrangements may include burial or cremation preferences, service details, music selections, readings, reception considerations, cemetery information, and other personal touches that help tell the story of a life well lived.
For many people, pre-planning is not simply about funeral arrangements โ it is about providing clarity, reducing uncertainty, and easing future burdens for those they love.
Why Families Choose to Pre-Plan
Every familyโs reasons are different.
Some people begin pre-planning after experiencing the death of a parent, spouse, sibling, or close friend. Others simply reach a point in life where they want important information organized and their wishes clearly documented.
Families often tell us there is peace of mind in knowing:
- important decisions have already been made,
- loved ones will not be left guessing,
- financial matters have been considered,
- and personal wishes will be understood and respected.
Pre-planning also allows you to make decisions carefully and at your own pace, without pressure or urgency.
Pre-Planning Does Not Mean Pre-Payment
Many people are surprised to learn that pre-planning and pre-paying are not the same thing.
Some families simply wish to document their preferences and provide guidance for the future. Others choose to prepay all or a portion of their arrangements for added financial security and peace of mind.
There is absolutely no obligation to prepay when making pre-arrangements.
If You Choose to Prepay
In Ontario, prepaid funeral funds are protected under provincial legislation, providing important safeguards for consumers and their families.
Many people appreciate the comfort of knowing that financial arrangements have already been taken care of and will not become an unexpected burden for loved ones in the future.
Flexible payment options are available, including monthly, annual, or single-payment arrangements. In many cases, services and merchandise that are prepaid in full are guaranteed at no additional cost when the arrangements are eventually required.
Should circumstances change over time, many arrangements can also be updated, transferred, or reviewed.
Existing Pre-Arrangements
Families occasionally relocate, experience changes in circumstances, or simply wish to review arrangements that may have been made many years ago.
If you have existing pre-arrangements with another funeral home, those arrangements may often be transferable. Our team would be pleased to review your current arrangements with you, answer any questions, and help you better understand the options available.
What You May Wish to Consider
When beginning the pre-planning process, some people find it helpful to think about:
- burial or cremation preferences,
- cemetery information or existing plots,
- preferred music or readings,
- clergy or celebrant preferences,
- military service or organizational affiliations,
- obituary details and family history,
- reception preferences,
- and financial considerations regarding prepayment.
Some families prefer to make detailed arrangements, while others simply wish to document a few important preferences. There is never any obligation, and we encourage families to move at a pace that feels comfortable for them.
