On September 26, 1985, God entrusted a beautiful baby girl to our care, we named her Amanda Theresa Allen. Born in Galway City, Ireland to John and Mary Allen, our beloved daughter was called Home to be with Our Lord on Sunday, June 21, 2015 at University Hospital, London following a very courageous battle with cancer.
Survived by: Fiancé Jason Henderson; loving brother Tony (Megan, and Hayley Amanda); G-ma Theresa Ryan (Mount Carmel), Nanny Jacqueline Allen (Ireland); Aunts & Uncles: Tina, Jackie (Phil), Anthony (Carmel), David (Nuala), Michael (Phil), Hazel (Niall), Maurice (Terri), Florence (Rudy), Mark (Joan), Lenard; Great-aunts: Philomena (NYC), Sr. Anne Gabriel (Ireland), Sr. Margaret Ryan (Regina); and many cousins.
Predeceased by: Godfather Sean C. Keane (2014), Tony Allen Snr (2002), Michael Ryan Snr (2000), and Mike Ryan Jnr (1994).
An enormous debt of gratitude to the dedicated health care professionals at University Hospital, London for the care and compassion shown to Amanda over the past 8 months. To all the surgeons, medical specialists, the nurses of the 8th Floor, ICU, and MOTS unit: words cannot express our respect and admiration for you.
Haskett Funeral Home, Exeter has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements. Mass will be held at Precious Blood Church, 200 Sanders Street West, Exeter on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at 10:30 AM followed immediately afterwards by “A Celebration of Amanda’s Life” at the South Huron Recreation Centre, 94 Victoria Street East, with music, memorials, reflections, refreshments and lunch.
A private family interment will be held at the Exeter Cemetery at a time to be determined.

We owe such a debt of gratitude to all our Families, Friends, Neighbours, Hospitals, Doctors, Nurses, and others who have supported Amanda and us, her family, throughout her 10 year courageous battle with cancer and especially over the last 8 months of Amanda’s hospitalization at UH, London.
There are so many we wish to name personally, alas we fear we will omit some – suffice it to say we are grateful and thankful to one and all. We live in the wonderful community among loving caring individuals. To our friends, neighbours, and to those we didn’t even realized helped us – thank you for snow removal, lawn care, food, visits & companionship, flowers, music, accommodations for families travelling from abroad, donations to named charities, masses, prayers and for all other support.
We must acknowledge others; UH London, Dr. Ward Davies, Dr. Heather Emmerton-Coughlin, Dr. Daniel Pepe, Dr. Shane Smith, Dr. Jeff Howel, all the awesome nurses of 8th Floor, I.C.U., & MOTS unit. Victoria Hospital – Dr. Michael Lock, Dr. Walter Kocha, and Dr. Richard Inculet. Exeter and Clinton Hospital staff & Dr. Jerry Jadd. Amanda’s life was extended due to the professional and compassionate care of all above. Amanda realized many of her life’s dreams and aspirations because of all of You – the work you do matters. Specifically we must commend Amanda’s UH, London “Dream Team” – Amanda assigned this term to her surgical team of Dr. Ward Davies, Heather, Daniel, and Shane, and the “ATeam” of nurses of the 8th Floor and Lynn CowdreyCarroll. Amanda adored all of you and we her family feel the same – please never change and mentor many more medical professionals just like you.
Amanda’s Funeral and Celebration of Life was attended by hundreds of family, friends, and associates – none of this would have been possible without the involvement of many. We are eternally grateful to Fr. We know there is no way possible for us, despite our best efforts, to thank everyone personally. We decided the best way to express our eternal gratitude to Everyone is to make a difference in someone else’s life. We do not have medical training to save lives, however we have means to help others less fortunate than us. We have made a personal commitment to sponsor an additional child through Compassion Canada. We will now personally sponsor two children from Ethiopia to ensure they are provided food and nourishment, clothing, education, health care and spiritual guidance. When these children no longer need sponsorship support we will sponsor additional children for the remainder of our lives. Compassion Canada is headquartered in London, Ontario – www.compassion.ca Thank you also to all who randomly contributed to Compassion Canada – $505 was collected at Amanda’s Celebration of Life.
Amanda’s Life Journey has inspired many – we know this from the personal stories shared with us, the exceptional attendance at her Funeral and Celebration of Life, the cards received, the condolence’s on Haskett’s website. To say we are Amanda’s proud Parents is an incredible understatement. That Amanda achieved so much in her short life, should inspire all her family and friends, to embrace life, do not take it for granted, live life fully, make healthy life choices and perform random acts of kindness for friends and strangers alike. You will be surprised how personally rewarding you will feel – and you may feel Amanda’s presence too. Amanda hoped that the medical world would learn from her cancer to help others, during the last 8 months of her life she required a significant amount of blood and blood products. She was very appreciative that she was the beneficiary of numerous blood donors. It was her wish that we encourage all who are medically capable to consider becoming regular blood donors, and also to consider registering as organ donors. (https://beadonor.ca/ and www. blood.ca )
We must also extend our thanks to all our family and friends who travelled from Ireland, NYC, Chicago, Calgary, Vancouver and Halifax. Thanks also to our extended families – Allen’s, Ryan’s, Heeman’s, Lally’s, Keane’s, Henderson’s and Van Dyk Families – across Canada, USA, Australia, Ireland & England. A special “Thank You” to SunWing Airlines’ co-workers of Amanda’s – you travelled so far and attended in great numbers. She loved SunWing Airlines and she realized her dream of being a flight attendant with you, her extended work family. We know you made her smile with pride by your attendance. We will never forget this loving gesture for our daughter.
Specifically to Amanda’s fiancé – Jason Henderson, you made Amanda’s life whole (with Lola). You remained with Amanda throughout your 9 year relationship despite long spells of surgery and recoveries over the years. You are clearly a family man, a person of honour. We love you and we will always consider you to be a member of the Allen Family. It is said, that every bird of prey looks over its shoulder before it goes in for the kill, even a hawk. They know instinctively to watch their backs – however, the only bird who does not do this, is the Eagle; It is fearless.
Eagles have been noted as symbols of strength, bravery, courage and proud independence. In rain, most birds seek for shelter, but not the Eagle, they are the only bird who fly above the clouds to avoid the rain. The Eagle has many lessons for us to learn.
Adapt to Change – When the Eagle starts aging and their energy starts to fail them, they fly to mountainous areas to shed off their feathers, break their beaks and remove their old talons. This is incredibly painful for them and yet, there is always a new growth of the beak, talons and feathers. This process happens over a period of five months and after this challenging time, the Eagle is “reborn” with renewed strength and vitality, ready to conquer and live for many years.
What we can learn from this act is to adapt to the challenges we are given and to accept the pain that comes with change. Like the Eagle, we often need to do this alone and have to endure uncomfortable times in order for us to grow and renew.
Wide Visionary – Eagle’s have a very sharp vision, they can identify their prey from a long distance, while soaring in the air. When we can identify a bigger picture in life rather than the one we see in front of us, we can have a different perspective to our challenges and receive more clarity and wisdom.
Overcome challenges – The Eagle changes direction easily and adapts quickly to storms and danger and knows when it is approaching. The Eagle never hides and faces its challenges without fear. This fearless nature can help us face our pain and concerns for the future. Eagle helps us to remember, when we have clear vision and clarity, we will know when a storm is approaching in life and will see a way through.

Amanda and I hit it off right away and were great friends through most of my life. I have so many memories that I now cherish and will always be grateful for. I still can’t believe she’s gone. So sorry to the Allen family and to Jason, she will be and is already missed!
I had the pleasure of working with Amanda and during that time she became a dear friend who was loved by so many. She was a beautiful person inside and out and I will miss her so much. The last time I met up with Amanda we were at a hotel gift shop in Jamaica! She was there on a stopover and we had a quick visit. I was so proud of her accomplishments… she was a beautiful young woman living her dream and it was hard to believe the years had passed so quickly. Now, it is hard to believe that she is gone. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this incredibly sad time. May you find peace and comfort in many wonderful memories.

My deepest condolences go out to Amanda’s family and friends. I have only fond memories of our time skating together and I can remember quite a few times where we would be the ones that were late and we’d be skating laps. Whenever I would see her later in our lives she always had a bright smile and had wonderful things to say and adventures to tell. It’s in this time that we realize that life is so very short but even though Amanda’s wasn’t long in time it can be measured in all the love that surrounded her.
I received the phone call today, My heart is sad but another angel has joined your circle, we meet in ICU months ago and had the pleasure of meeting you and your family. going to miss our early morning face book chats. I still have a picture of your snowflake I made hugs Amanda going to miss that smile :) hugs to your family and Mom

I don’t know you or Amanda, but just thinking about your loss makes my heart hurt for you.
I lost a sister to cancer and I understand the tremendous loss that comes with the bitter taste of death, especially of one so young. Gone too soon.
May you find comfort in the love of family, friends, and strangers, and be reassured that many others viewed her life as precious and her death a great loss.
From her picture I can see that Amanda has a wonderful smile… a beautiful Irish smile. May her smile always stay vivid in your fond memories of Amanda.
